Welcome to the Tall Tales Newsletter!
This is YA author Poppy Nwosu here, and welcome to my November 2019 tall tales newsletter!
A huge WELCOME to my new subscribers, and thank you for joining in! How exciting! (Even though one of you is my cousin! Still, a subscriber is a subscriber, I am not fussy! Ha!)
But seriously, thank you to my new non-cousin subscribers, I am super grateful you are here!
Also, I am kind of creeped out that it is November already. I feel like I have so many things I still want to get done before the end of the year, but I am running out of time. Oh no!
Thanks again for being here with me today, and here is what you can expect from this month's letter:
A little about me
What I am writing
What I am reading
Words of the month
Happy reading :) Poppy Nwosu.
I hope everyone has had a good, positive and productive month!
Mine has been busy, with some fun panel appearances at a Writing Festival and a big multi-author bookstore appearance (and yes I was deathly nervous but I did also have a lot of fun too!).
But my absolute favourite news this month is that I applied for, and got, my dream job!
I feel incredibly lucky and really want to share what it is here, but I am not completely sure if I am allowed to or not yet, so next month I will have started so I definitely will then. Sorry... how secretive and annoying!
But basically ... I have spent the past five years working in an industry I don't at all feel passionate about, and after such a long time it really feels very amazing that I will soon be doing something I really care about, in an industry I absolutely love!
This lucky break has gotten me thinking a lot this month about getting stuck in ruts. Sometimes I think it is only ever with hindsight that you can see how far you dug yourself into a situation that made you unhappy, and you feel like it's too difficult to find a way out.
But also in hindsight, it's easy to see that there is always a different way to live your life and make yourself happier. Sometimes making a big change or a life choice like that isn't easy, but I do think it is worth it.
So I guess my biggest take away from the whole thing, is a reminder that we all are the only people who have control over our own happiness. There is no point waiting for someone else to come and save you if you aren't feeling good. I think it is important to remember to take control over your own life and do whatever you have to so that you are happy. It's true sometimes that isn't easy, but I think it is worth it!
I hope none of you are stuck in a rut like I was, but if you are, I hope you find a way out, and figure out what makes you happy!
Too cheesy for you? Or not cheesy enough? Ha!
Oh well, as cheesy as it all is, it has been on my mind a lot lately, so there you go!
I have been busy with the writing lately, still working on my super secret project, which still needs a lot more editing work before I send it off to my agent to see what she thinks. I am excited about it, and the very first rough draft is done, but I still can't really talk about this one too much!
In the meantime though, we are moving closer to 2020 and the release of my second novel TAKING DOWN EVELYN TAIT!
I am very very excited to share this story! I had a lot of fun with adding in weird chapter titles for this novel! I think in the lead-up to the book release I may share some of the chapter headings over on Instagram, so if you haven't already, you can follow me there if you want to :)
I think this book is a little more comedic than MAKING FRIENDS WITH ALICE DYSON. So there you go.
A WEIRD FACT: The protagonist in TAKING DOWN EVELYN TAIT was originally called Lotte, short for Charlotte, but no one at my publishers was sure how to pronounce it so we changed it to Lottie!
I think most of the major edits are pretty much complete for TAKING DOWN EVELYN TAIT and the manuscript is off to for copyediting now (though there will still be lots more tweaking!)
Next it will be cover design time, which is always very exciting! :)
So in the meantime, here are the writing things I'm focused on at the moment:
Getting ready for final TAKING DOWN EVELYN TAIT further edits and proofreading
I worked madly on a bunch of MAKING FRIENDS WITH ALICE DYSON edits for when it is published in America towards the end of next year! There were quite a few more changes than I expected, but I didn't mind, it was a lot of hard work, but also very interesting to see how my story might get changed for an American market! I haven't heard back yet from my American editor if she felt my changes worked or not yet.... fingers crossed!
I saw a very early black and white mock up of the American edition book cover for MAKING FRIENDS WITH ALICE DYSON and I can tell you it is a completely new cover from my current Australian one! It is still an illustration, but very different! I hope I can share it here for you soon! :)
Working on my super fun secret manuscript project....
Poetry stuff? Nope. I'm not brave enough to share it yet! Maybe one day....
So that is what I've been working on! :)
Also ... I read THIS IS HOW WE CHANGE THE ENDING by Vikki Wakefield, one of my absolute favourite authors. Her work is dark, lyrical, raw, gritty and beautiful. This new 2019 #LoveOzYA book is no exception! I loved it!
These are lyrics from a band I adore (ever since I was a teenager) called Bloc Party. I think I love them so very much especially because of their lyrics! The lead singer, Kele Okereke, writes the most beautiful words in the world.
Goodbye and thanks heaps!
Thank you for reading this letter and I'll look forward to chatting with you again next month! :)
Thank you all again for signing up for this thing, and for your support and passion towards my fiction writing! It makes me feel very happy!
