Why do I write YA?

Well because I love YA (young adult fiction).
Obviously.

But to dig a little deeper than that, ...... .Sometimes I think about why I love YA literature so much.
I think about why I love it apart from the obvious (so many genres within YA, you can read an endless array of extraordinarily diverse stories, from gritty contemporary to romance to far out fantasy or science fiction).

I think about this often.
Why do I love YA?

Why do I love to write YA?

What is it about YA that speaks so strongly to me?

I think it is the  fact that mostly every YA hero is a person in the process of discovering themselves and who they want to be, no matter if it is a fantasy or a reality based contemporary. Usually, we have protagonists who are changing, growing, building and creating themselves.

And I identify with that.

Not only because I was a teenager and have been through the stage of discovering what kind of person I want to be, but because I am still going through that stage right now, even though I’m all grown up.

My theory is that we all are still in that stage in a way.

We’re all changing all the time.

I love the way YA novels focus so closely on this theme of change and growth.
Even though my experiences might be different now I am older, I still absolutely love this theme of change, because no matter how far away I get from being a teenager, that feeling is so completely universal.

I
t’s something reflected in everyone around me.
